ONE HUNGRY ELEPHANT

On June 2, an elephant from a wildlife park, strolled into a small grocery store in Thailand, walked up to the counter, and began chomping on snacks. Park workers slowly shooed the pachyderm out the door. He exited, still holding a bag of snacks with his trunk. The store owner was amused, stating the creature ate nine bags of sweet crackers, a sandwich and some dried bananas. He created little damage, except mud tracks on the floor and ceiling—as well as an unpaid food bill.  (https://apnews.com/article/thailand-wild-elephant-grocery-shop-4e6abf114e8b12e3fb5e3e1c74de2dc4)

You can bet no one saw that coming! Uncertainties in life are unavoidable—such as encountering an elephant in a grocery store. And if one word described our times, it would perhaps be “uncertain.” But I’m not certain about that.

Turn on the news (if you dare). Non-violent protests erupt into riots. Discussions of wars and rumors of wars, lead to pundits tossing the word “nuclear” around like a verbal volleyball. Then there are the uncertainties of daily life: A routine doctor visit turns into a cancer diagnosis. Over a casual lunch, a spouse asks for a divorce. Our job is outsourced, and the price of gas rises, almost while we’re pumping it.

If you’re looking for stability in our world, kiss that dream goodbye. Only God can provide the security we long for. In Psalm 62:2 as David was assaulted by evil men wanting to kill him (which would definitely qualify as uncertainty), he declares, “[God] alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken.”

Nothing takes God by surprise. He’s the only sure thing in life. Look to him. Lean on him. Listen to him, during times of uncertainty. Even if you’re standing face-to-face with an elephant in the grocery store.

Principle: In our uncertain world, only God offers the certainty we need.

Ponder:

  • What uncertainties are you currently, or have you recently, faced?

  • In what ways can you draw closer to the Lord, and rely on him for strength and security?

Pursue: For a deeper dive, study Psalm 62.

Loving Father, you see all the uncertainty in my life, and I know you want to help me. Give me the faith to rely on you for my all my needs.
