DUMPED FOR A PIG
I once met Goofy—well, actually a man who wore the costume of the character Goofy at Disneyland. He said while working there, he dated the woman who dressed up as Snow White. But sadly, their romance came to a heartbreaking end, when she left him for one of the three pigs. (Seriously, I’m not making this up).
The real-life metaphors in this story are simply too rich to resist. How awesome would it be to date Snow White? Does life get any better than that? But then to lose the princess of all Disney princesses, because she dumped you for a pig? That’s about as low as one can plummet. I’m trying to imagine how her “Dear John” letter would’ve read.
Think of how this relates to the ups-and-downs and twists-and-turns of life. One moment you’re riding a wave of success, the next you’re slammed to the ground. Joseph in the Old Testament knew this feeling well. One day he was Daddy’s favorite; the next, a slave in Egypt. Later he was demoted from slavery to a prisoner in a dungeon. Finally in one day (literally), he went from life as a prisoner to being the ruler of Egypt. Through it all, Joseph never gave up on God, and God remained faithful.
Our experiences may not be as extreme, but we all encounter the roller-coaster of life’s circumstances. In the midst of these uncertainties, one constant remains; one certainty on which we can depend: The Lord Jesus. In Matthew 7:24-27 Jesus states that when we build our lives on his teaching, we’re standing on solid rock, and can withstand any storm. Through the ups and downs of life, hang onto Jesus and don’t let go—whether you’re dating Snow White, or sulking in the shame of being replaced by one of the three little pigs.
Ponder:
When have you faced the “roller coaster” of life’s uncertainties?
How does looking to Jesus give you the confidence you need during these difficult times?
Pursue: For a deeper dive, read Matthew 7:24-27.
Dear Jesus, thank you for the strength and certainty you give me during the dark days of life. Help me to stand on you as my Rock.
