A LEAP OF FAITH

I crouched at the door, my heels firmly resting on the plane’s floor. My toes were pointed toward terra firma, 13,000 feet below. It was too late to turn back. With my instructor firmly strapped to my back, I pushed off. The wind blasted my face at 120 m.p.h. and the parachute didn’t immediately open. Anxiety began to grip my heart, as I imagined the worst-case scenario. After a minute, it unfolded, and I peacefully drifted over Central California vineyards, my senses feasting on the experience. My “leap of faith” was fearful, but worth the risk.

In the midst of our uncertainties, God often calls us to step out in faith. Sometimes this involves action; on other occasions we wait on him and trust his timing. He simply asks us to believe his promises that he has an amazing future for us. He’ll guide us to a safe landing, even if it doesn’t feel safe at times. “We live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

Scripture is packed with stories of men and women who trusted God just enough to take a step of faith. Abraham possessed just enough faith to leave Ur; David trusted God just enough to put a rock in his sling; and Mary just enough to say “Yes” to Gabriel.

It comes down to how much we trust our Instructor. Prior to jumping out of the plane, my instructor shared his credentials: he was a member of the US skydiving team, and a veteran of 14,000 jumps. I felt safe (relatively) knowing I could place my life in his hands. And that’s all we need with the Lord. Jesus tells us, “Put your trust in me” (John 14:1, NLV). Living by faith can be downright scary. But the alternative of facing life’s troubles without trusting God—muscling our way through our struggles—is far worse. Trust God, and get ready to be blessed.

Jesus didn’t make 14,000 skydiving jumps, but He took the ultimate "leap" when he came to earth. His credentials far outweigh any human’s. He's the all-powerful, all-seeing, all-knowing Creator. Over and over, he comes through in our lives. Maybe not in the way we always want, but even better than we imagined. We can trust him. So strap on your parachute, and take that leap of faith. He'll guide you all the way to safety.

Principle: We can trust Jesus, our Instructor, when he calls us to take a leap of faith.

Ponder:

  • When have you found yourself in a situation where you had to take a leap of faith?

  • What potential situations do you currently face, that require an extra measure of trust in God?

Pursue: For a deeper dive, study Hebrews 11.

Lord, increase my faith so that I’m willing to totally trust you with every area of my life.
