THE BEST WAY TO KILL ZOMBIES

It began as a harmless discussion between my two oldest grandsons, who were teens: “What’s the best way to kill zombies?” A chainsaw? A bat with nails? An AR-15? Their debate quickly escalated into a verbal Gettysburg. They locked onto their opinions like … well, zombies on meat, and it was game on. I interrupted the conflict, reminding them that zombies are fictional, hence to knock off the fruitless discussion. I might as well have been mumbling in my sleep. I feared they were on the verge of fisticuffs. I walked away shaking my head at the utter foolishness of this worthless debate.
Then I wondered, how often do I allow Satan to fill my head with fictional fears? I begin obsessing over finances or work or children. Before you can say “living dead,” I’m stressed-out over anxieties so far removed from reality, you can’t even recognize them. Much like my grandsons, I’m worked up over a bizarre fantasy.
According to a University of Michigan study, 98 percent of our worries never happen. We create ulcers, make ourselves miserable, and strain our relationships over stuff that will never occur! Once we step onto “Anxiety Avenue,” it’s hard to reverse our tracks.
Philippians 4:6 states, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything” (NLT). Even while being pursued by a maniac who wanted him dead, David wrote, “There’s no risk of failure with God. So why would I let worry paralyze me?” (Psalm 62:2 TPT). Reflect on those statements. They sure sound a whole lot better than tossing and turning at night, fretting over stuff I can’t change. Whether we’re worrying over a job interview, our kids’ grades, or being chased by zombies, worry is a waste of time, health, and life. The best way to kill “zombies?” Along with all our other fears, give them to God, and they’ll go away.
Ponder:
What zombie-like fictional fears are you nursing?
How does the promise that “there’s no risk of failure with God” offer you assurance?
Pursue: For a deeper dive, study Matthew 6:25–34.
Lord, You are in charge of all things. There’s no basis for any fear. Free me from the “zombie worries” I create in my mind.
