TATOOED ON GOD’S HANDS
During the D-Day invasion, an American soldier named Leon was captured by the Nazis. Somehow he escaped and made contact with the French underground. He exchanged his American credentials for a French ID card and found his way back to an Allied camp. But without American identification, officials suspected he might be a spy.
To prove he was an American, he rolled up his sleeve. On his arm was a tattoo of an eagle, with an American flag on its breast and the word Mother inscribed across it. That was proof enough. (Source: Max Lucado, Unbreakable Courage)
That wouldn’t cut it with today’s army, but here’s the point: Tattoos are meant to last. You can’t wash, scrub, or scour them away. Removing one is possible, but it’s not fun.
When it comes to our identity, God gives us an even more powerful picture.
In Isaiah 49, God’s people were in captivity, and many wondered whether the Lord had forgotten them. Their complaint was heartbreaking: “The LORD has forsaken me” (v.14).
God answered with this assurance: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” (v.15).
Then comes one of the most comforting promises in Scripture: “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands” (v.16). Engraved. Inscribed. Permanently marked. God wants His people to know they’re not forgotten.
Ever feel as though God has forgotten you? Perhaps your prayers seem unanswered, your struggles endless, or His presence feels distant. You may wonder whether He still sees you or knows what you’re going through.
Remember this: God who holds the universe in His hands promises that we are engraved on those very hands. When life leaves you wondering where you stand with God, remember where He says you stand: permanently in His sight and never forgotten by Him.
PONDER:
· Under what circumstances have you questioned God’s presence in your struggles?
· During those times, what truth about God’s character brings you the greatest comfort?
PURSUE: For a deeper dive, read and meditate on Isaiah 49.
Loving Father, help me remember that You never lose sight of me. When doubts arise and Your presence seems distant, remind me of Your unfailing love and help me rest in the assurance that I am never forgotten by You. Amen.
