JESUS TAKE THE WHEEL

I wasn’t as freaked-out as I thought I would be. Last month, I rode in a driverless car. The owner programed it and took his hands off the wheel. The car took off unassisted, turned corners by itself, stopped at traffic lights, dodged parked vehicles, and even stopped for pedestrians. All-in-all, a surreal experience.
That made me wonder, “How many folks are cruising through life in driverless cars, searching for destiny and direction?” They may be in the driver’s seat, yet they’re not driving. We’ve all been there. But there’s a better way: Take our hands off the wheel and let God “steer the car.”
Carrie Underwood’s 2005 hit song, “Jesus Take the Wheel” describes a woman in a desperate situation she’s powerless to change. Finally, she surrenders control and asks Jesus to “take the wheel” of her life. She experiences joy she’s never known.
In Psalm 37:5 David writes, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this.” David learned this in the fires of affliction. In 1 Samuel 30, his family was kidnapped, his possessions stolen, he was threatened by his enemies, and now his own men wanted him dead. Talk about a driverless car!
Where could he turn? What could he do? Verse six provides the answer. “David found strength in the Lord.” Basically, David grabbed his harp and sang, “Lord, Take the Wheel.”
As humans, we were never intended to be in charge of our lives. The third step of AA is to turn your life and will over to God. Of course we play a part—but when we surrender to his power, our life is changed forever. What situation are you currently facing where you need to let Jesus “take the wheel?” Why not try it? He’s a much better driver than any of us will ever be.
Ponder:
What area of life are you currently facing which you need to surrender to Jesus: family, career, your walk with the Lord, etc.?
How can you learn to let Jesus take the wheel?

Lord Jesus, “take the wheel” in my life when I encounter situations too big for me to handle. I surrender control to you.
