TWENTY-FIVE YEARS LATER...
Some events are so etched into our memories that we’ll never forget where we were when they happened: JFK’s assassination, the Challenger disaster, or 9/11. Twenty-five years later, we don’t need to explain what “9/11” means. Those two numbers are enough.
Roughly one hundred million Americans have no memory of this tragedy. It’s more than fitting for us to pause on this day, and consider where we are twenty-five years later. What’s changed in our nation?
Everything. And nothing.
Externally, we’re different people. This tragedy redefined how we travel; trust our national security; and view the uncertainty of life.
Twenty-five years have changed the world around us. But they haven’t changed the fundamental condition of the human heart. Deep inside we all need a Savior to deliver us from ourselves, because we’re slaves to sin (Romans 6:17). We may build better security systems, but no security system can protect us from the sin within us. Sin can be an attractive master, but it’s always a brutal one.
Twenty-five years later, Jesus remains the answer to our deepest needs. I know…that’s what you expect me to say—but it’s the absolute truth. Knowing Jesus brings forgiveness (Matthew 26:28), freedom (Galatians 5:1), fulfillment (John 6:35) and abundant life (John 10:10).
I witnessed this in the life of a young couple who visited the church where I was preaching the Sunday following 9/11. When I gave an invitation, the husband literally climbed over the pews, came forward, and gave his life to Jesus. Today, he and his wife serve the Lord faithfully in ministry. In the aftermath of devastation, they discovered the life-transforming power of God.
Twenty-five years have passed. Much has changed. But the greatest need of the human heart has not. Jesus remains the answer. As you reflect on 9/11, may you remember not only what happened twenty-five years ago, but what matters eternally today.
